Way back in 1996 Cyndy Barton had a roasted red salsa recipe which she decided to enter into the National Fiery Food Challenge. Craig, her husband, "borrowed" her recipe and (to use Chef Emeril Lagasse's term) "kicked it up a notch." He entered his own version of Cyndy's recipe into the same contest. Cyndy got a letter politely thanking her for her entry, but informing her that her salsa was not a finalist in the competition. Two days later a letter arrived for Craig. Since he was at work, Cyndy opened the letter, then phoned Craig to tell him- 'I'm never speaking to you again, but before I quit, let me read this letter to you. "We are pleased to announce that your salsa has been selected as a finalist in the National Fiery Foods Challenge..." And so it began for this enterprising couple. By the way- Cyndy got her revenge by developing Smoky Hill Salsa Verde in 1997. It has now won more awards than any of their other products! By 1998, all of their salsas had won National Fiery Food Challenge awards. If you like that "smoky pepper taste" you'll love this salsa! Click here for recipe using this salsa.
